What we can do for you

Whether your query concerns family history or local history we can help you to discover more.

Historic archives held by Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent Archive Service are available in original form. Some may only be available in microform and some are in the form of transcripts. These archives are described in our current guides, catalogues and indexes. We are in the process of putting our catalogues online. Access to this resource is free of charge. We also provide free downloads of some of our Guides to Sources, which you may find helpful.

We can provide information about what we hold free of charge, if the answer can be obtained by checking our catalogues and indexes. If the documents themselves require searching in order to answer an enquiry then we will refer you to our research services for which fees are charged, or you may prefer to visit us to undertake your own research, which can be carried out free of charge.

Freedom of Information

Most records are open for research but a few are closed in whole or in part because information in them is exempt information under the Freedom of Information Act or the Environmental Information Regulations. Restrictions are indicated in our catalogues and will be reviewed on request. There is no charge for this review.

Lichfield Record Office closed to the public in December 2017. Documents formerly held there can now be consulted at Staffordshire Record Office.  Some of the records are held at an out-store, for which a minimum of two working days' notice is required for production. Please check our online catalogue, Gateway to the Past, or contact Staffordshire Record Office to check on availability.
