Curriculum delivery
Class/subjects teachers ensure that:
- The many potential benefits of using ICT to enhance learning experiences and as a tool for communication are explored (AET, Core Competencies C&L4).
- The understanding of tasks are regularly checked and a range of opportunities are provided for pupils with social communication needs to enable them to participate throughout the lesson (AET, Core Competencies, C&L5).
- A range of opportunities are created for pupils with social communication needs to practise and use their knowledge and skills across situations and people (AET, Core Competencies, C&L6).
- Transitions are prepared well in advance using a range of means (AET, Core Competencies, C&L7).
- Tasks and lessons have a visible and predictable structure, with explicitly described objectives, which are returned to at the end of the lesson (AET, Core Competencies, C&L8).
- They recognise that pupils with social communication needs will benefit if teachers adjust their communication style by speaking clearly, slowly and calmly, and give pupils enough time to respond to instructions and requests (AET, Core Competencies, EE3).
Please refer to the Tools for Teachers section on the AET website for more details on making adjustments to the curriculum delivery. There is a small charge for this but it is available free when schools attend the Tier 2 or 3 training.
