Staffordshire and the Zulu War

The Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 is one of the best known wars fought by Queen Victoria's army.  This fully-illustrated book looks at the links between Staffordshire and the War, through the unique photograph album of William Littleton, held today at Staffordshire Record Office.  Littleton was the private secretary to the British High Commissioner, Sir Henry Bartle Frere and was on the spot during the build-up to hostilities.  Using maps and reconstructions, the role of the South Staffordshire Regiment in the fighting is also examined.

An Officer at Waterloo

This leaflet recounts the experiences of Lieutenant-Colonel Fredrick Ponsonby of the 12th Light Dragoons at Waterloo in 1815. Wounded early in the battle, Ponsonby lay helpless near the French lines, where he encountered a series of characters as the day wore on, including a chatty French sharpshooter, a plundering Prussian  and a lost British infantryman.  The original letter relating this well-known account is held at Staffordshire Record Office and forms the basis of this transcript. The booklet also contains a short biography.
