Network Rails FAQs
Why does Network Rail want to close Branston level crossing?
Network Rail initially took the decision to close the level crossing due to safety concerns in 2012. From 2005 until its closure, one fatality and 12 near misses were recorded at the level crossing. The level crossing has remained closed since 2012.
Has Network Rail considered alternatives to closure?
Network Rail submitted two alternative planning applications but received large public opposition and neither progressed. We have worked with local stakeholders to try to reach a solution for residents.
Closing this level crossing will impact on residents – what mitigations are being put in place?
We recognise our commitment to provide a safe right of way and are committed to working with local stakeholders to do so. However, the crossing cannot be reopened in its previous form as it is just not a safe route for pedestrians.
General safety of level crossings
Network Rail is committed to ensuring that everyone using the rail network gets home safely every day. Pedestrian level crossings can be dangerous places with multiple trains running over them at high speeds. Network Rail works hard to make sure that appropriate measures are put in place for users of pedestrian level crossings, and carefully monitors unsafe incidents and examples of misuse.
