Phase 3 - Radford Bank to Queensville Roundabout

The works consist of the provision of carriageway / footway resurfacing, street lighting improvements, significant maintenance works on the grade II listed Radford River Bridge, together with improved cycling and walking measures between Meadow Ridge Toucan Crossing and Windsor Road.

The proposals consist of:

  • Carriageway and footway resurfacing works.

  • Repairs to existing drainage system

  • Replacement of significantly weathered sandstone columns on Radford River Bridge which are supporting the parapet wall. Realignment and repointing of the leaning southern parapet wall, to maintain its structural integrity and patch repairs of eroded pieces of stonework.

  • Provision of nominally 3 metre wide shared cycle route between Meadow Ridge Toucan and Radford River Bridge footbridge.

  • Removal of footway on western side between access to Staffordshire Wildlife Trust and new puffin crossing (adjacent Aldi).

  • Upgrade existing puffin crossing adjacent Meadow Ridge to a toucan and provide new puffin crossing between Aldi and Radford Bank River Bridge.

  • Street Lighting and traffic sign improvements.

together with associated earthworks, kerbing, footways, surfacing, traffic signs, street lighting, relocation of bus shelter and road markings.

The proposals are:

Traffic Management

A combination of traffic management measures including:

  • Limited duration for temporary traffic lights may be required for certain drainage works.

  • One way closure southbound between Radford Bank and Queensville and diversion, footway closures and full road closures are required for night-time surfacing.

Between Weeping Cross Roundabout and Windsor Road One-way closure

There will be a one-way closure and diversion from 1st September until mid-December, in use 24 hours a day.

Traffic will only be able to use Radford Bank and Queensville heading towards Stafford town centre.

The start and the end points of the one-way closure will change to some extent as the project progresses. We will update directly affected residents and businesses when this is appropriate.

All diversion routes will be signed but road-users should feel free to use other routes that might be more convenient, if they are suitable for their vehicle.

Traffic management Plans can be found here:

One way closure southbound Radford Rise - Windsor Road

The length of road to be closed is:

The signed diversion routes will be:

The red route is for vehicles that cannot pass below the low railway bridge on the A51 near Hixon.

We need to sign a diversion route of the same standard as the road that is being closed.  However, we expect that local traffic will probably be able to find other routes that they consider to be more convenient.

Baswich Lane between St Thomas Lane and Tilcon Avenue

Baswich Lane will be made one-way temporarily, so that traffic can only travel from St Thomas Lane towards Baswich.

The one-way closure and diversion will operate from 1 September until mid-December, 24hrs a day.

Ampleforth Drive

The nearside lane and left turn lane exit onto Queensville will be closed between Queensville and Ampleforth Roundabouts (adjacent to No. 27), from 9 September for the duration of one-way closure and diversion.

Radford Rise

The lower junction off the A34 Radford Bank (adjacent to No. 9), will be closed for the duration of closure.  Access / exit will be at the A34 junction near to the War Memorial. For now, traffic exiting from Radford Rise will have to join the one-way flow going down Radford Bank.  (At a later stage, as works progress, this will not be necessary).

Access to Businesses

Access to businesses will be maintained throughout the works.
