Phase 3 - Radford Bank to Queensville Roundabout

Radford Bank and Queensville between No. 17 Radford Bank and Queensville Roundabout

The works consist of the provision of carriageway / footway resurfacing, street lighting improvements, significant maintenance works on the grade II listed Radford River Bridge, together with improved cycling and walking measures between Meadow Ridge Toucan Crossing and Windsor Road.

The proposals consist of:

  • Carriageway and footway resurfacing works.
  • Replacement of significantly weathered sandstone columns which are supporting the parapet wall, realignment and repointing of the leaning southern parapet wall, to maintain its structural integrity and patch repairs of eroded pieces of stonework to maintain its structural integrity.
  • Provision of nominal 3 metre wide shared cycle route between Meadow Ridge Toucan and Radford River Bridge footbridge.
  • Removal of footway on western side between access to Staffordshire Wildlife Trust and new puffin crossing (adjacent Aldi)
  • Upgrade existing puffin crossing adjacent Meadow Ridge to a toucan and provide new puffin crossing between Aldi and Radford Bank River Bridge
  • Street Lighting and traffic sign improvements

together with associated site clearance, drainage, earthworks, kerbing, footways, surfacing, traffic signs, street lighting, relocation of bus shelter and road markings.

Traffic Management

A combination of traffic management measures including:

  • Narrow lanes / lane closures from a point approximately 100m south of Radford Rise (No. 17 Radford Bank) to Weeping Cross and Windsor Road to Queensville Roundabout (to allow 2 way traffic flow) will be used to carry out the works.
  • Limited duration for temporary traffic lights may be required for certain drainage works.
  • One way closure southbound between Radford Bank and Queensville and diversion, footway closures and full road closures are required for night-time surfacing.

One way closure and diversion, 24 hour use

Start from 01/09/24 for approximately four months

Between No. 17 Radford Bank and Windsor Road

During the one-way closure on Radford Bank, it is expected that displaced traffic will use the north end of Baswich Lane to avoid congestion.  This stretch includes narrow weight-restricted bridges with poor visibility and there is an increased potential for road traffic accidents.

The Baswich Lane bridges will be under temporary traffic signals. This may delay traffic but will reduce traffic collisions and bridge strikes; both of which have the potential to cause far more severe delays.

Lower junction off the A34 Radford Bank (adjacent No. 9), will also be closed for the duration of closure, access / egress will be at the A34 junction near to the War Memorial.

Traffic management Plans can be found here:

One way closure southbound Radford Rise - Windsor Road

The length of road to be closed is:

The signed diversion routes will be:

The red route is for vehicles that cannot pass below the low railway bridge on the A51 near Hixon.

We need to sign a diversion route of the same standard as the road that is being closed.  However, we expect that local traffic will probably be able to find other routes that they consider to be more convenient.
