‌ Accessibility guidance

Keep an eye out for hints and tips in these yellow boxes. The notes in these yellow boxes will help you keep your website content accessible. The tips will be applicable to the training section you are reading, but the same rules apply to all areas of your website.

The website template we have provided is accessible, however it is your responsibility to ensure your content is compliant where it needs to be. Please see our accessibility page for further information about what this means.

You are required to provide an accessibility statement on your website - this is something that we will set up for you but please ensure you have read it so you are aware of what you need to do in terms of your website content. If we have set one up for you, it will be linked from you website footer.

The main culprit for not meeting accessibility legislation are documents such as PDFs, Word and Excel. Documents tend to feature quite heavily on parish council websites but the good news is - documents created prior to 23 September 2018 can be classed as a disproportionate burden as it would take too much time and money to convert the files to an accessible format. However, you should state that you can supply these files in accessible format if they are requested. You must also be shown to be actively improving the accessibility of all documents from 23 September 2018 to present. If the document is a map, then they are exempt.
