B480 Elford Bridge, Alrewas

A stone parapet on Elford Bridge is damaged and the adjacent stone retaining wall has deteriorated and been identified as being substandard. Hence the Staffordshire County Council Highways team is undertaking essential work to repair the damaged stone parapet and upgrade the failing retaining wall. The works are deemed essential to ensure the bridge parapets and adjacent retaining wall meet minimum national highway standards, and to ensure future public safety. The works will cost approximately £100,000 and will extend the structures useful life for several more years or possibly decades. Elford Bridge will be closed to vehicular traffic, but pedestrian access will be maintained where possible for the duration of the works. It is hoped the closure can be minimised by using temporary traffic lights for some of the works.

When are the works taking place?

14 August 2023 subject to river levels, (Consents granted after several months).

When will the works be completed?

Before October 2023, (estimated 6 week works duration), subject to river levels being low enough to safely access and repair the stone retaining wall.

Will I be able to access my home/business?

Yes

What effect could the works have on me?

It will be necessary to close Elford Bridge which may lead to delays but, pedestrian access will be maintained where possible. It is hoped the closure will be minimised by using three-way traffic lights whenever possible.
