Carriageway reconstruction works and traffic signal upgrade on the B5008 Newton Road (Inclusive of A0511 Swan Junction), Burton Upon Trent

As part of the Council’s ongoing investment into its roads and associated infrastructure in Staffordshire, Amey Services Ltd working with Staffordshire County Council, will shortly begin carrying out works on Swan junction, including on the junction of B5008 Newton Road/Bearwood Hill Road.

Works will include the removal of the existing carriageway surface and replacing it with a new surface (and associated preparatory works known as ‘civil works’), alongside drainage repair and clearance, replacement of traffic signals, ironwork repairs, replacement of pedestrian guardrails and cutting back of vegetation.

Phase 1

From 7.30am on Tuesday 23 July 2024 the works and traffic management will be as follows:

Bearwood Hill Road

Replacement and adjustment of kerbs where necessary, minor footway patching, replacement of pedestrian guard rails, replacement and adjustment of carriageway ironwork and repairs to the drainage system and cleaning and jetting the highway gullies and manholes. These initial works on Bearwood Hill Road during the daytime, under a road closure and will be in place 24/7. Access for residents during this time will be via the local signed diversion route. If safe to do so, the road will open at weekends. Bearwood Hill Road will reopen on Wednesday 31 July 2024.

Newton Road

To minimise future disruption to the local community, we will be working in collaboration with National Grid as they continue to undertake their telecoms project, installing a single duct in the footway along Newton Road from property number 27 to the junction of Newton Road and Bearwood Hill Road. During this time, Staffordshire County Council will be carrying out civils works at this location to help maximise the programme of works and minimise disruption. Works here will be undertaken during the daytime.

A one-way system along Newton Road will be in operation 24/7 in the direction from Mill Hill Lane towards Burton. The left-hand filter lane on Burton Bridge will be suspended to traffic turning left onto Newton Road and traffic travelling straight on from Stapenhill Road across to Newton Road will not be permitted. Access for residents during this time will be via the local signed diversion route. If safe to do so, the road will be open at weekends. The works on Newton Road are due to be completed on Wednesday 31 July 2024, where the one-way system will be removed. We will continue to undertake other preparation works until Friday 2 August 2024 in other areas of the scheme.

Please note that your electricity supply will not be affected and access to properties will not be required whilst National Grid carry out their works.

Phase 2

From 7.30am on Monday 5 August 2024, we will begin the upgrade works to the traffic signals on the A5011 Swan Junction during daytime working hours (Monday to Friday). This will include the removal of the existing traffic signals and upgrading them to newer, more modern and efficient traffic signals equipment. Swarco are the traffic signals maintenance contractor for Staffordshire County Council and will be carrying out these works. These works will be carried out under temporary traffic signals and will be in operation 24/7 until the upgrade works have been completed. On occasion throughout this phase, we may need to close the left-hand filter lane (Monday to Friday 9.30am – 3.30pm) on Burton Bridge to suspend traffic turning left onto Newton Road. This is to enable us to carry out the upgrade works to the traffic light ducting. We will continue to undertake our civil works during the daytime, (Monday to Friday). The traffic signal upgrade works are due to be completed on Thursday 29 August 2024.

From 7.30am on Monday 12 August, Burton Bridge will be reduced to one lane in and one lane out of the town 24/7. This is to allow for ongoing civils works, ensuring a safe environment for our workforce and to avoid confusion from changing traffic management layout. We will also begin our overnight carriageway reconstruction works taking place between the hours of 20.00pm to 05.00am from Monday 12 August to Thursday 29 August 2024 which will include the re-setting and replacement of carriageway ironworks, the removal of the existing carriageway surface and replacing it with a new surface. There will be no access between Newton Road and Stapenhill Road during the overnight road closures. Road closure positions and marked diversion routes will vary dependent on the section where we are working.

Following the completion of this phase of works on Thursday 29 August 2024, the lane closures on Burton Bridge will be removed.

Phase 3

Friday 30 August to Tuesday 3 September 2024 – (Monday to Friday) between the hours of 20.00pm to 5am overnight works will continue, refreshing road markings and installing traffic signal equipment. There will continue to be no access between Newton Road and Stapenhill Road during the overnight road closures. Road closure positions and marked diversion routes will vary dependent on the section where we are working.

Wednesday 4 September to Friday 6 September 2024 –refreshing of road markings along Burton Bridge. Burton Bridge in its entirety will be closed overnight between the hours of 20.00pm to 5am. A road diversion will be in place.

When are the works taking place?

The work will commence on the 23 July to the 6 September 2024

How long will the works take?

Approximately 7 weeks to complete the works.

What effect could the works have on me?

We take care to make sure that work is completed with the minimum of disturbance to the local community but as with any major works, some minor traffic delays may occur.

The works may at times be noisy, and we apologise in advance for any inconvenience or disturbance caused. We’ll do our best to complete the work as quickly and safely as possible. We like to thank you for your patience during this works.

Please take care to plan your journeys and if necessary move vehicles to an accessible location.
